Book Club Discussion

Hi, Charmers!

(remember to read the entire thing, there is important information at the bottom! also, there are links throughout, so if something is a different color, there's a good chance it's a link.)

So many things have happened in the past few weeks! I apologize that we haven't been able to get together lately. However, seeing as this isn't really affecting anything we're doing, I would suggest that we change our meeting times to once a month. This seems to work and doesn't put a time strain on anyone. We'll just have to pick a day that everyone can get together. I'd like to meet at least once more before break, and we also have some book club business to discuss.

Regarding book club:

One, we need to vote on who will be heading the book club. We can either set up a poll online--but that means everyone must vote online--or we can try a hand-polled vote. Either way, we would need everyone involved at the meeting or online.

Two, after the person is picked, they need to do the following:

  1. Put up a sign-up, or set up an information meeting and advertise.
  2. Put together an advertising campaign (Shelby and Branton) before Christmas break.
  3. Decide on meeting times and questions for each.
  4. Make sure everyone can buy/or get Looking for Alaska.
  5. Call the location you'd like to have the meetings at and figure out when a good time is for them and you.
  6. Photographer, Brittany W., needs to take pictures of a few meetings/events for this.
Three, once we come back from Christmas break, we should be starting up the actual meetings. This will be our winter project. The book club meetings will be separate from the actual HPA meetings and need to be organized as such. We will still have our (new!) monthly meetings, but the book club will be an added thing that you may or may not want to participate in. It is not required.

Regarding "Odds in Our Favor" campaign:

As some of you who have been checking the HPA website may know, there is a campaign going on right now called "Odds in Our Favor." This is a campaign that compares the economic inequality in Panem to the economic inequalities we are experiencing in the world today. This is taking place in the form of social media (i.e., blogs, videos, pictures, and so on). It has gone viral and many websites have taken up the call of the campaign.

Here is the HPA's description of the campaign.
You can join the resistance here.

We won't be participating in this as an actual campaign, as most of us are very busy with schoolwork, finals, activities, extracurriculars, clubs, and the like. But, if any of you would like to submit to this campaign, the links are above. You can also change your Facebook picture to you with the District 12 salute (three fingers up in a girl scout type salute) as many others are doing.

Here are some more resources if you think this might be something you're interested in.

~*~Please discuss in the comments. If we don't get enough discussion, we will have to have a meeting. However, if we do discuss and everyone participates, we should be able to only have one meeting before Christmas break.~*~

Thank you to everyone and Don't Forget To Be Awesome (DFTBA),

Erika

  1. The plan sounds good! So is the book club going to still be affiliated with HPA or are we going to raise it and release it into the wild with one person? I say we get all this going as soon as possible, so online or on paper- let's vote!

  2. I think we should vote online...I was also wondering the same thing as Darby...I'm guessing the book club is separate?

    1. It says on the post that it is separate and not require.

  3. first thing: is this where we comment?
    second: if not too bad.
third: i agree with Darby on getting this started asap. I don't think we should put it all on one person. I think that one person needs like a helper or a subcommittee or something. That is a lot of stress on one person especially with schoolwork. I think online voting will be easier. We could make an announcement in the Chargergram. If we choose to do paper, it would require a day that does not exist where we could all get together.

  4. Well you three ^^^ made my life easier because I agree with starting up soon and online voting. As soon as I get dates I'll wipe up some magical people catching advertisement(: And also I think we should advertise with minimal association with HPA itself. I know its different and already not required but our name might scare away some avid readers!

  5. I could not agree more with all of you. we really need to get started. I also like the idea of doing as much online as possible, its hard to get a reasonable number of us in the same room at the same time. I like Shelby's idea.

  6. As everyone has been saying, the book club is not affiliated with the HPA (i.e. Not required). However, we can include it as one of our campaigns in the long run for literacy. I agree that this shouldn't all be on one person, but this person will be in charge of putting together committees to help themselves. They will have a few responsibilities, and it is their job to carry them out. If this doesn't sound like something you want to do, i would suggest maybe trying again next year for a position.
I also agree we need to get started ASAP. This means i need to set up a poll and we need to get advertisements/sign ups going right away. We only have a few weeks left before break. Anyone have suggestions on a good place to poll?
Does anyone have any other suggestions?

  7. I agree with Shelby. I'm excited to get reading! However, I would caution you, Erika, on putting people's full names on the open wide internet. (poor Brittany W. :( )

    1. I understand your concern, and I will fix it, but if you look at your username your will find that all of our full names are on the "open wide internet."

  8. to add to Tori's comment, we could also maybe discuss the book online in between meetings if we are not able to have them as often as we want. I know it might not be the best idea but it's a suggestion

    1. That's a really good idea, Karli! Maybe they could set up something to comment. Perhaps a schoology group? That would probably work for everyone in the school.
